Start with the same scope
Two quotes can describe very different jobs. Before comparing the totals, check that both cover the same tree, the same amount of cleanup and the same plan for the wood. A lower price is difficult to evaluate if part of the job is missing.
Describe access and surroundings
Tell the crew about narrow gates, steep ground, nearby buildings and places equipment cannot go. Include the town and the number of trees. You do not need to measure a hazardous tree or approach it to make the request.
Separate removal from the finish
Ask whether branches will be chipped or hauled, whether logs stay and whether stump work is included. If you want usable firewood, agree on what that means. A written scope makes it easier to know when the job is complete.
Check permission before scheduling
Your address determines which city or county to contact. Trees near shorelines or sensitive areas may need additional review. Ask the permitting office about the specific property before approving work; a general web guide cannot determine the rules for your lot.
